France, 1770. Marianne, a painter, is commissioned to do the wedding portrait of Héloïse, a young woman who has just left the convent. Héloïse is a reluctant bride to be and Marianne must paint her without her knowing. She observes her by day, to paint her secretly.

Céline Sciamma

Céline Sciamma, a greedy film-lover, studied scriptwriting with an eagerness to meet people and talk about her generation. During her studies she built long-lasting friendships with Rebecca Zlotowski and Marie Amachoukeli (director of Party Girl). She shot her first feature film (Water Lilies) without any prior experience of making a first short film. After this film everything went very fast. Céline Sciamma is probably one of the best French film directors to have appeared in recent years. Although she looks like a girl just out of high school she is very mature and organized. For her fist three films she dived into youth (Water Lilies, Tomboy, Girlhood), always with a great deal of freshness and lightness. In her first film, Water Lilies, she examined the moment when desire materializes in a young girl’s mind. Tomboy, her second film is a splendid chronicle, free of any counterfeiting, of a young girl who pretends she is a boy. Her last film, Girlhood, which was presented at the opening of the Quinzaine des réalisateurs in Cannes, follows the path that brings together a group of “bad girls”.
