The battle of amfAR
Director: Rob Epstein, Jeffrey Friedman
USA, 2013
Documentary (LGBT)
Duration: 40 min
Language: English
Subtitles: Serbian
When AIDS struck in the early 1980s, a scientist and a movie star did not have to respond – but they did. Dr. Mathilde Krim and Elizabeth Taylor joined forces to create amfAR, the Foundation for AIDS Research. The fight against HIV has never been the same. The Perfect Host reveals how two powerful and very different women came together, and what their combined efforts achieved. With passion and wit, Taylor wielded celebrity as a weapon against government indifference while Krim’s commitment to science ensured support for the most promising research areas. Today, the only man cured of AIDS can thank research championed by Mathilde Krim. Visually dazzling and emotionally compelling, this story offers a surprising perspective on the still ongoing fight against AIDS.

It is my hope that this documentary will educate viewers to their reality.

Zürich in the mid 50’s: The young shy teacher Ernst Ostertag becomes a member of the gay organization DER KREIS. There he gets to know the transvestite star Röbi Rapp – and immediately falls head over heels in love with him. Röbi and Ernst live through the high point and the eventual decline of the organization, which in the whole of Europe is seen as the pioneer of gay emancipation. Ernst finds himself torn between his bourgeois existence and his commitment to homosexuality, for Röbi it is about his first serious love relationship. A relationship which will last a lifetime. The film looks back from the present to the time when the “Mother” of all European homosexual organizations had its high point to the time it slowly fell apart.
While the repression against homosexuals became increasingly more intense in Zurich, two young and very different men fight for their love and – together with their friends – for the rights of gays.

A behind-the-scenes look inside the historic case to overturn California’s ban on same-sex marriage. The high-profile trial first makes headlines with the unlikely pairing of Ted Olson and David Boies, political foes who last faced off as opposing attorneys in Bush v. Gore. The film also follows the plaintiffs, two gay couples who find their families at the center of the same-sex marriage controversy. Five years in the making, this is the story of how they took the first federal marriage equality lawsuit to the U.S. Supreme Court.

Austria, 2013
Documentary

Language: German, English
Subtitles: Serbian

What works for us today, fulfills us? What do we believe in? And what is still worth fighting for? This is the digital age, most of us are financially independent, traditional social structures do not seem to count much anymore. A sense of being lost in the globalized world is felt by many. ‘Feeling at home’, does that still exist? One partner and one home – GLOBALLY YOURS?

To investigate, Marko sets out on a very personal exploration in search of the life goals of his generation. He is 35 and still without a place called ‘home’ – and far from becoming a father. Why is that? After all, it seems he has found the right woman. What is he waiting for? Is he expecting some sort of magic sign, is he just looking for the right moment? But when might that moment arrive? And what will it look like? Is he still holding out for ‘something better’? Really?

Looking for answers, Marko explores the lives of friends in Vienna, Belgrade, Dubai, Berlin and Addis Abeba. GLOBALLY YOURS is an ironic yet analytical portrayal of a generation in pursuit of fulfilling relationships in changing times.

Audre Lorde – The Berlin Years
Director: Dagmar Schultz
Germany, 2012.
Documentary
Duration: 81 min.
Language: German, English
Subtitles: Serbian

2012 marks the 20th anniversary of Audre Lorde’s passing, the acclaimed Black lesbian feminist poet and activist. Audre Lorde – The Berlin Years 1984 to 1992 explores a little-known chapter of the writer’s prolific life, a period in which she helped ignite the Afro-German Movement and made lasting contributions to the German political and cultural scene before and after the fall of the Berlin Wall. Lorde mentored and encouraged Black German women to write and publish as a way of asserting their identities, rights and culture in a society that isolated and silenced them, while she challenged white German women to acknowledge and constructively use their white privilege. This documentary contains previously unreleased audiovisual material from director Dagmar Schultz’s personal archive, including stunning images of Audre Lorde off stage. With testimony from Lorde’s colleagues, students and friends, this film documents Lorde’s lasting legacy in Germany.
