50-year old Marijana, better known as Mackica (Kitten), grew up in an orphanage as her impoverished mother could not take care of her. She spent some time in a foster home but never had a real family. When the wars broke out in the former Yugoslavia in 1991, she joined the Serbian warlord Zeljko Raznatovic Arkan’s paramilitary unit, “Tigers”. She began by working as a nurse and did all the training like the other fighters and became Arkan’s personal bodyguard. She carried arms and trained others in a notorious paramilitary force, however seen as heroes among Serb population in Croatia, Bosnia and Kosovo. Arkan was her best man at the wedding and she has often been meeting her wartime buddies, who, she said, Serbia has completely neglected after the conflict. Her husband died of cancer but she said she has loved twice, and both times it was a woman.
